The plot and the characters




The Quiet follows Dot (Camilla Belle), a deaf-mute orphan who moves in with her godparents Paul (Martin Donovan) and Olivia (Edie Falco) after her father's death. She soon realizes that their daughter Nina (Elisha Cuthbert), her former childhood friend, is being sexually abused by Paul, who is also her biological father. Dot becomes a silent witness to their twisted relationship, as well as to Olivia's alcoholism and drug addiction. Dot also attracts the attention of Connor (Shawn Ashmore), a popular basketball player who has a crush on her. As Dot tries to cope with her new situation, she also plots to expose Paul's crimes and save Nina from his clutches.


The Quiet was directed by Jamie Babbit, who is best known for her debut film But I'm a Cheerleader (1999), a comedy about a lesbian teenager who is sent to a conversion therapy camp. The Quiet was written by Abdi Nazemian and Micah Schraft, who also served as executive producers. The film was shot in Austin, Texas in 2004, with a budget of $900,000. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005, where it received mixed reviews from critics. It was later acquired by Destination Films, who released it theatrically in August 2006 through Sony Pictures Classics. The film was commercially unsuccessful but found success in DVD sales.
